Not just because the astounding visuals bear resemblance to District 9 (made by the same guys, duh) but because the theme and the motives of the main character reminded me of something: A German point and click game trilogy called Deponia.
The name Elysium comes from Greek mythology and it is a concept of afterlife were the chosen ones experience a blessed and happy life. Both works are based on that, so they all "ripped off" the ancient Greeks. But the similarities do not end here.
Since the game came out first and I played with that before watching the movie, I will start with it:
The hero of the Deponia trilogy is a resourceful guy called Rufus, who lives on the garbage pile of a planet called Deponia. Even since he was a child he wanted to leave this place and go to live at a luxurious city called Elysium orbiting the planet, where all the rich people live.

Without spoiling the ending for both, I will just say that even the fate of the heroes are similar at the end. The developers of the game said they think it is just a coincidence.
